Do you know if the tapes of this version have ever surfaced on the net? There seems to be very little information about it, other than quoted criticisms. Liam refers to it in an early interview (“we got the Kinks producer in, but he wasn’t right for us. So we sacked him”). Mark Coyle and Marcus Russell criticize the producer’s technique of recording each instrument separately rather than recording the band playing together.
Anjali Dutt is more positive about it than the other interviewees and notes several differences between the abandoned Monnow Valley version and the released CD (namely that it had a drier, more understated sound that some of her friends prefer and that ‘Up in the Sky’ was far more psychedelic, with backwards guitars).
Anyone heard this? I’m surprised they didn’t include any excerpts from it on the DVD. It’d be interesting to hear those familiar songs without Owen Morris’s wall of noise production. Maybe they’ll end up on a mammoth box set one day…Oasis Anthology anyone?
